Starter Optimist (scuba)

The underwater world has always fascinated you. The colors. The silence. In this beginner course, you’ll move from dreaming about diving to truly experiencing it. You’re ready to take your very first dive and your first breath underwater becomes the beginning of something extraordinary.

Welcome to your Starter Optimist Journey!
This is your ticket to love the ocean while being part of it. After joining one of the Blue Meet-Ups you’ll start your journey in understanding the ocean not only as a destination, but as a living, breathing force that shapes our planet – and our future.

Requirements to start
You are so excited about starting this new journey in connecting with the ocean!

Also on your pre-journey checklist:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • you are fit to dive, find out more
  • you can swim for at least 200 meter

Explore the ocean –  Learn Beyond the Dive
You’ll learn the essential theory that forms the foundation of safe and responsible diving — understanding pressure, buoyancy, equipment, marine environments, and underwater communication. Clear, structured guidance ensures you not only know what to do, but why you do it. Confidence starts with knowledge.

Every great diver begins somewhere and you’ll begin in the pool. In a safe, controlled environment, you’ll practice the fundamental skills that make diving feel natural. Breathing underwater. Clearing your mask. Controlling your buoyancy. Moving with ease.

When you’re ready, you’ll step into the open water — where theory becomes reality and the underwater world opens around you. Your first descent. Your first real dive. Your first moment of floating weightlessly: an experience you’ll never forget.

Your Starter Optimist Journey goes further than technical skills. Through engaging online courses and inspiring in-person workshops, you’ll deepen your understanding of marine ecosystems and the vital role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth.

You won’t just learn to dive — you’ll be diving with awareness.

Become an Ocean Optimist
As a Starter Optimist you’ll take meaningful land-based action that supports ocean conservation and responsible exploration. From mindful travel choices to community initiatives, you’ll discover how your impact above the surface matters just as much as your behavior below it.

Because becoming a diver also means becoming an Ocean Ambassador.

Connect With a Community That Cares
You are not alone in your love for the ocean. As part of the Ocean Optimist community, you’ll connect with like-minded individuals who share your curiosity, compassion and commitment. Together, we exchange ideas, spark innovation and amplify positive change.

Because protecting the ocean belongs to all of us.

Keep on wondering – And Your Pace Slow
This is more than a beginner course. It’s your gateway to adventure and an introduction to a global community. This is your first step into a world few get to experience firsthand.
